Stay Small, Stay Profitable

People often ask me to explain a statement on our website: “we can we can supply what we design, even in low volumes.” Some people understand my explanation right away; others take longer.

Economies of scale are well understood. Bigger factories are more efficient, bigger distribution networks are more efficient, bigger ad campaigns can be more efficient. It’s often hard to defeat a major competitor, particularly if the market is looking for security and the status quo. Read More.


DeWALT Innovates with Product Mix, not Just Tools

DeWALT Tools, known for heavy-duty, contractor-grade power tools, recently announced that it will begin offering a line of hand tools. According to DeWALT, each of these tools is designed to “live up to even the toughest standards” of people who earn their living using hand tools every day.

This new line of DeWALT tools has been a long time coming. In November 2009, Stanley Tools, a manufacturer synonymous with hand tool development, merged with Black and Decker, a leader in power tool innovations. At the time, the corporations cited the merger as an opportunity to build a larger, more comprehensive offering across all major tool categories with the goal of continued expansion. Nearly a year and a half later, Stanley and Black and Decker seem to be accomplishing their goal.

The Art of Impossibility

Here’s a thought to chew on while you’re considering your new year’s resolution: if it’s not laughably impossible, hopelessly impractical, preposterously insurmountable—stop. Start over. You’re not doing it right.

Let me explain, with a little parable. In 2007, Blackberry-maker RIM was king of the mobile hill. Yet when word of a disruptive new phone—from an industry outsider, no less—began to spread, RIM didn’t just downplay the news, it discounted it almost entirely. RIM seemed to think that Apple’s nascent iPhone was literally, well, impossible. RIM had access to the same chips and circuits, the same mobile networks and carriers, the same raw materials and currency, as Apple did. Of course, the iPhone wasn’t impossible—it was very real. And the rest, as they, say, is history.
